Temperament and the Impact of Stuttering in Children Aged 8–14 Years

Purpose The goal of this study was to evaluate possible associations between child- and mother-reported temperament, stuttering severity, child-reported impact in school-age children who stutter. Method Participants were 123 stutter (94 boys 29 girls) 9;0 14;10 (years;months) their mothers. Temperament assessed with the revised child parent version Early Adolescent Questionnaire–Revised ( Ellis & Rothbart, 2001 ). Overall Assessment Speaker's Experience Stuttering (Yaruss Quesal, 2006) used impact. Results Child- temperament factors correlated moderately. No statistically significant found severity. Surgency (both mother-reported) Negative Affect (only child-reported) moderately Impact several subsections (i.e., Reactions, Daily Communication, and/or Quality Life) Stuttering. Conclusions More extraverted less fearful/shy experience a lower overall stuttering. Children higher levels irritability frustration Since children's ratings more sensitive these than mothers, supports inclusion questionnaires future research.
